Moving
the Academy
On
December 10, 2003, a crowd that gathered to watch the
historical move was silent as the wheels began to turn
under the 113-year-old edifice, but it spontaneously
erupted into cheers as people realized how smoothly
the building was rolling arount the corner of the gymnasium
it had sat behind for half a century.
The moving crew brought the academy
around the corner the first night; the next day they
straightened its course and stopped at the edge of the
parking lot. There the building waited as over 14,000 pieces of
cribbing from the academy's old foundation hole were moved into position to receive the academy at the new location in Benson Park, 2.5
blocks away.
