Restoration and Uses of the Academy

Long-time caretaker David Mitchel shows architect Joseph Linton names carved in the walls of the OSA.Future uses of the academy include a variety of public functions.

  • A museum will not only tell the rich pioneer, Native American and geological history of the area, but of the academies built throughout the west. The Preston Area Chamber of Commerce has signed a letter of intent to rent a room as their offices to the community. The OSA will be a welcome center to tourists embarking upon the 127-mile Pioneer Historic Byway that begins six miles south of the academy.
  • One of the classrooms on the main floor will be restored as a classroom for students of the 21st century to experience education of the 19th century – 10 desks built in 1888 were discovered in a walled-up corner of the building as preparations were made to move it.
  • The top floor of the academy is a window-lined ballroom. This will be rented out to the public for weddings, reunions, conferences, concerts, art shows and similar public events.
  • The basement will feature a kitchen, a historical library and offices.
  • A courtyard in back of the building will lend itself to summer-time entertainment such as outdoor concerts and theatrical productions.
